Actually, you will be required to pay some money upfront for any work. This is a cash poor country and half the time they need the anticipo (pronounced ahn-tee-SEE-poh) to cover purchase of materials. So no way are you going to get off contracting work without paying something up front. It is correct that you should never pay in full upfront. That way leads possible disaster. Typically the anticipo will be 60% of the total price/estimate which is known as a presupuesto.
Don't go buying a business here whatever you do. Maybe after you've lived here awhile -- like at least 6 months. You're really asking for it diving in immediately.
