52 days to go until we are back in paradise...Can't wait to see the changes that have taken place in the last year. This will be our first stay at El Cid and I'm hoping to stay in the Tower as I have read that these are the best rooms/views? We will be there from March 8-17th. Can anyone tell me what beach or beaches would be the best to snorkle to find/see sea stars and/or sand dollars? Thanks...Christy

Columbia Shallows, only reachable by boat has an area called Cielo with lots of star fish. All the higher qual boat snorkeling tours hit this -- if they know how to find it. I know Rosi's Mystic Snorkeling Tour goes there.

Check the laws, I believe all of the waters around CZ are a national marine sanctuary and nothing can be taken.

Someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

I think you are in fact wrong. The park is from somewhere around Villa Blanca south around the tip somewhere. Of course it may still just be illegal generally to take stuff. That I don't know. I know outside the park anyone can kill lionfish to one's heart's content.

You can fish outside the marine park but you can't take any kind of plant life. Technically I believe that also includes things like beach drift wood and it most certainly includes anything that is alive in or near the water. Definitely illegal to poach.

You also can't take the blue barrels that wash up on the beach either. Right, Carey?

The map that I have shows the marine park going from Puerta Maya to Punta Chiqueros.

You can take NOTHING from the beaches, including driftwood, shells, or seeds...

Help yourself to anything plastic, or footwear.

Help yourself to anything plastic or footwear.

This reminds me of something I can never figure out...why is it when you drive around cities in the US you see so many single shoes laying in the street? How do so many people manage to lose one shoe? And to lose them in major intersections. Is it just me?

Whatever - you know darn well you'd not take the footwear unless you could find a purse to match it!

I have had the understanding that it is always open season on Lion Fish, even inside the marine park. In fact I have watched people get paid a 'bounty' on them at the marina, paid by the officials at the marina. Is this the case?
