I've been taking the Learning Spanish Like Crazy audio course, which is pretty good, except for something that's been driving me nuts.

How do you pronounce "Yo"?

The course has two Spanish speakers who repeat phrases; one will say "Yo" starting with a standard English "y" sound, like in "yellow". The other pronounces it as "Jo", like in "joe". (This also applies to any other "Y" sound or "LL".)

I know both are correct, but which is more common in Quintana Roo? I'd like to sound like less of an idiot when I'm finally there. :-D

TIA!

Do not: say it like you’re saying “yo-yo” or “yo, adrian!”

Do not: say it “Jo” – that’s a dialect, which a gringa should not have.

Do: Say it “Yo” with a soft “O” - as in when you’re saying like “Pollo”

MC

PS – do not pronounce “pollo” in spanish like “polo” in english :D

Thanks for the response, Mark. I feel more comfortable with "Yo" (like in "pollo"), so this is good news.
