I'm coming down to Coz for the annual ScubaBoard Cozumel Invasion, June 30-July 7. But, in order to get the cheap airfare on Sun Country, I had to go down on the 29th and fly back on the 8th, so I'm looking for a cheap hotel for 2 nights, on June 29 and July 7. The Invasion is staying at the Hotel Cozumel & Resort, doing the AI thing (not my preference, but it's the group thing). I could just book 2 more nights there on the European Plan for $74 a night, plus tax, but thought I could do a lot better. Casa Del Mar, which I like, is only $54 a night. Hotel Villas Caribe (is that the place that used to be the Best Western? It's on 11 Sur back around 25, so it seems like the right location) is $44 a night. Have the owners upgraded, cause that used to be a bit of a dump? Not that I object to dumps, I just object to overpaying for them. But I used to be able to find a cheap stay for $25 or less. Of course in June, July, AC is critical, so that's a must. A pool would be a plus, but I'm flexible on that. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Man, hotel cozumel for 74, CDM 54... you'd save $40 and have to check in, unpack, repack, check out, lug it all, take a cab there, check in, unpack again... to save $40?

Stay in one place... and post lots of trip pics :)

The old Days Inn now Villas Caribe on Calle 11 is quite run down and the pool isn't all that nice any more, I'm told. If you want a real change of scene, nice staff and a cheap intown experience, you might consider La Pepita on Avenida 15 between Calle 1 and Calle 3. No pool or view but its a fun, right downtown location near all the bars and restaurants and only a block from the zolaco. I think you might find a room with AC there for around $300 pesos/night but not sure about that. Fridge in room, AC. Clean but extremely basic and, as I said, a good intown location and nice people running it.

If you have an email for the owners of this place, do them a favor and let them know that none of their webpages will scroll down the page. At least not in the chrome browser which I use. I'd email them myself and tell them this but I can't scroll down to find the mailto: link

that is a very good location also by the way.

Yes - I was thinking of the old Days Inn - Don't know why I said Best Western. I stayed there in December, 1999-January, 2000 (at least until my unscheduled transfer to a Clinic after my Moped Accident on 01/01/00 - I can't ever forget that date), and it was not in great shape then. Clean but basic is all I'm looking for; if I save $40 a night on a hotel that I'll only be sleeping in, less a couple of $5 cab fares, that's an extra $70 I can spend on food, drink, & diving. I understand your point, MarkC, but we all have different tradeoff points for price vs. convenience. And I pack lite & don't spend much time repacking, so the inconvenience of switching hotels for me is less than the extra (net) $25-$35 per night it would cost me to just stay in one place. I'll check out La Pepita.

I found the website www.hotelpepitacozumel.com -- Is that it? The links & pages worked fine. Brochure lists $39 a night, but I sent them an email to check rates.

I lurk on the forums and I always enjoy very much. The subject of Villas Caribe did get my attention. I believe if you call it a dump you are being kind. The last I knew of the place was not so long ago when the owner was found murdered in one of the rooms. I dont really know the outcome. It was the last I read.
Other good choices listed here. I do remember the Pepita as being a good buy and it was always popular with divers.

Yes, that is the website for Hotel Pepita. I live right up the street a couple of blocks so go by their front door a lot. I often see gringo tourists hanging around on the sidewalk outside waiting for friends before they set out and they always seem pretty happy.

Hotel Caribe on Calle 2 bet. 15 & 20 is where the owner was killed. Not the same place as Villas Caribe, the former Days Inn, on Calle 11 Sur.

Cheaper are Hostelito on Ave. 10 just north of Juarez & Amigo's Hostel on Calle 7 Sur. Maybe also Suites Vima on Ave. 10 N.

Known many who've stayed at Pepita & Casona Real & they were happy with the accommodations.

I stand corrected, Deb. Thanks.
Last time I checked the private room rate at Hostelito for a friend it worked out to be more than Pepita. And I really dont like the poured cement beds at Hostelito. Give me an old fashioned bed like at Pepita.

I would stay at the Villa Blanca Hotel. Don't book through their web site. Go to skyauction.com and type in Cozumel. You have plenty of time and they always have their rooms up for auction. The auction price is $32 per room plus what you bid. There is also a $20 processing fee. Bid $1 and if you win the room will cost you a total of $43 per night for a regular room with air and a refrigerator. There is also a nice pool and restaurant. The hotel is across the street from the ocean with nice views and great gardens. One of the best values on Cozumel in my opinion. You could also try to e-mail Jorge through their web site and try to get it for the same price. They shouldn't be busy that time of year.

I don't believe it was the Hotel Caribe where the 'owner' was found dead. Hotel Caribe is owned by the Borge family (the parents of the current governer of Q-Roo) who live on-site at the back of the property. When I stayed there about a year ago there were state-level secret-service-type bodyguards there 24/7 protecting the governer's family. This is the bright pink hotel on Calle 2.

Yes, you are right and I am wrong. Yet another "Caribe" place - Hotel Villas Caribe on Ave. 15 near 12. My link
The armed men showing up at the Calle 2 Caribe about the same time as the murder left a mistaken impression on me.
