Locked the hubs and drove north from Mescalitas. Went about 6 miles in an hour and a half (with a couple stops). Made it to the military outpost where a very nice guy with a automatic weapon asked us where we were going. "Back," we said, although he seemed to indicate that continuing north would have been ok. Some VERY rough "road" in places - mostly driving over just old coral. Some gorgeous beaches with no one in sight, beautiful ironshore, and maybe a Mayan watch tower(?) - got to look that one up! If you have a capable vehicle with some height (ours is a 4x4 Nissan 1999 w/o any lift) and you never have ventured I would recommend it! Rental car/jeep NO WAY! Get a group together to go together? Sure! Maybe we could bring a bunch of garbage bags and pick up mans' legacy, plastic... it is so awful how much they is everywhere.

Congratulations! I wouldn't dream of driving up there. You hear of too many people getting stuck. Good for you though having a successful adventure. Too bad about the garbage.
