it appears that the politicians in Mexico have come up with  a new law.

This is from my lawyer, Gisela Rodriguez at it relates to real estate sales.

"What you should know?

For buyers: Foreign nationals are allowed to buy real estate in Mexico. They are not required to have a temporary or permanent resident status, neither a CURP number or a tax ID (RFC) like some sites have posted incorrectly."

The most important thing in life is not knowing everything, it's having the phone number of somebody who does!

Unless something changes, it seems clear that the problems this could solve are fewer and less severe than the problems it's sure to cause.

A simple(-ish) solution would be to return to issuing a CURP to anyone who's here legally and requests it, such as people on FMM. There are lots of legitimate reasons for such people to transact the sort of business that the government justifiably wants to track, such as buying or selling real estate or vehicles. It seems perfectly reasonable to ask such people to register for an ID number if they can actually get one.

Requiring a CURP then limiting CURP's to people with citizenship or temporary or permanent residency is going to hit a number of markets pretty hard. It could gut real estate, for one thing.

Mark, read the post I just updated in regards to CURP and real estate..

The BS going on with vehicle registration and plates seem to be holding.  You need your CURP number.
