I am going to be sailing into Cozumel on RCL and would like to know about how much I should be looking to spend for a cab to and from the cruise ship. I will be traveling alone as my husband is going fishing. Would you recommend a single women who has never been there to travel by herself? Will it be easy enough for me to get around? Kinda a scaredy cat but don't want to sit on the ship all day!!
Thanks

You'll be totally fine on your own. I live on the island full time and so do a lot of other women from the U.S. This is a very safe and friendly kind of place as you will see immediately. Just tell the cabbie to drop you in Centro. That's downtown. Actually, if it's shopping you're after, have them drop you on the waterfront at Cinco Soles -- SINK-oh SOH-lays -- which is a very large and beautifully laid out store full of interesting stuff from all over Mexico. After you get done there, walk back from the water for one block and then turn right. You'll be on a pretty backstreet with park benches, streetlights and wide sidewalks. Stroll this for 3 or 4 blocks and you'll hit the pedesterian only downtown plaza. A block before you get there, watch for the famous Zermatt bakery on a corner to your left as you're walking south towards the plaza. Good place to pick up a chocolate brioche if you're in the mood and then explore the plaza. If you're hungry for an authentic and very affordable lunch in a clean environment, continue on through the plaza on the same course (Avenida 5, one block back from the water) and in 1.5 blocks on your right you'll come to Sabores, which is someone's home who turns it into a restaurant during the day with tables inside and in the back garden. Good food, great prices, nice and clean.
When you're ready to go back to the ship, just head to the water and there will be taxis everywhere. All of the drivers speak a little English and many are pretty fluent.
Not to worry. Have fun!

we just got back from spending 10 days in cozumel at a resort and used taxi service every day that we were there. make sure you ask the cab driver what the exact cost will be before you get in his cab, that way he can't change the price of the fare after you get there. we even had a couple of cab drivers tell us that if we used a smaller taxi instead of a van that the fare is cheaper....,and they were correct. you won't have any problems at all getting a taxi in cozumel and it is a very safe island, even for a woman on her own. enjoy your time there shopping and make sure you haggle on their prices as a lot of times they will go down on their price.
